Yoni Eggs and Wands

WHAT ACTUALLY IS A YONI EGG AND A YONI WAND?

The word yoni is from Sanskrit, and refers to the female sexual organs including the vagina, vulva and uterus. It is a word that expresses the sacredness of the female body. The yoni egg practice itself is actually an ancient and spiritual practice.

A yoni egg is a small, smooth, egg-shaped stone or crystal with a more feminine shape, while the original wands have a straight shape and are slightly thinner at one end than at the base, so a more masculine shape.

Both have several holistic effects, such as:

  • Releasing and processing sexual energy blockages / traumas.
  • Increasing sensitivity, pleasure and orgasms.
  • Enhancing blood circulation.
  • Developing a more sacred connection with your yoni.
  • Receiving the metaphysical properties of the crystal used.
  • Stimulating healthy vaginal lubrication.

Yoni eggs are better for tightening the pelvic floor, improving circulation and lubrication, relieving menstrual pain and preventing and improving urinary incontinence. You can also stay in the yoni for a longer practice over several hours during the day or night. This way you have more time to build and restore sensory awareness for stronger healing results.

Yoni wands are better suited to de-armouring the vagina and cervix, as you can also hold the wand when it is in the cervix, and then direct it to specific points and hold it there while your body lets go. They are also a wonderful pleasure tool. A Yoni Wand is definitely recommended for cervical stimulation as its length allows for better cervical stimulation and it is very difficult to reach these areas with your fingers.

ARE THEY SAFE TO USE?

There are mixed opinions about their use, and some gynaecologists advise against their use. However, myself and many other women have used them without adverse effects. Many of the risks associated with yoni eggs, such as vaginal infection, can be avoided if you follow the advice on safe use. I think it is safer to use a crystal than a rubber or plastic sex toy. Make sure you buy from a reputable supplier such as the Tantra Shop and don’t buy a cheap product from a dodgy source.

Do not use it in case of / during ….

  • a vaginal infection, e.g. a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis
  • Pregnancy, unless your doctor has approved it.
  • a urinary tract infection
  • A sexually transmitted disease
  • use of an intrauterine device
  • your menstruation
  • recent childbirth (only after it has healed)

HOW TO CLEAN, SANITISE AND RECHARGE YONI EGGS AND WANDS

Before you use your yoni egg or wand, you need to clean them. For a thorough cleaning, simply wash it with boiled, salty, not too hot water. You can also add a few drops of tea tree oil to the water to further kill bacteria. This method should be used before first use or for a more thorough cleaning, e.g. if you have dropped your egg in the toilet.

Before and after each use, you should wash the crystal with lukewarm water. If you have a drilled egg, you should make sure that the hole is clean and free of liquid after use. You can do this by first using a cotton bud and then rinsing water through the passage and blowing through the hole.

It is advisable to regularly remove negative energy from the crystals and charge them, just like other crystals. To do this, the egg can be placed in a bowl with water and sea salt. The bowl can then be placed outside to recharge the energy of the sun or light, or you can perform a full moon cleansing ritual. The energies of the full moon are particularly good for cleansing your crystal of negative energies and positively charging it. Lay the crystals out overnight, if possible on a natural surface such as earth, stone or wood. Set an intention for the cleansing. Clean the crystals with warm water before the next use.

You can also smoke your Yoni Egg with sage or Palo Santo.

THE USE OF THE WANDS

You can use lubricant or high-quality coconut oil for insertion. The wand has a narrow and a wide end, you decide which one suits you. Apply circular pressure to your cervix, which in yoni reflexology is connected to the heart, to experience heart-opening orgasms. You can also gently guide the yoni wand to the front of your yoni and massage your G-spot here.

Stay intuitive and take your time. Observe the sensations without judgement and lovingly enjoy your body as it is. Be aware that using a yoni stick can trigger many emotions that are stored in your yoni. The healing properties of the stone can release these tensions and negative energies, so allow it all: feeling is healing.

The Yoni Wand can also be used by your partner to massage your yoni.

ABOUT THE USE OF YONI EGGS

THE RIGHT SIZE

Yoni eggs usually come in three sizes: small (20×30 mm), medium (30×40 mm) and large (40×50 mm). The size actually has little to do with the size of your vagina and more to do with the strength of your vaginal muscles.

Medium yoni eggs are the best beginner size for most women. Large eggs are appropriate for women who have had children in the past, recently given birth, or experience urinary incontinence whilst small eggs are more suitable for women who have more experience working with yoni eggs or doing Kegel exercises. They can also be the right fit for you if you’ve never had children or you experience tightness of the pelvic floor.

But as a new user, you’re likely find that your pelvic floor is weaker and less trained. Large eggs can be heavy and uncomfortable after a short while, whilst small eggs may be difficult to keep in place during your yoni exercises. Larger eggs are easier for the vaginal muscles to grip on to. Smaller eggs are better suited to advanced practitioners with more muscle strentgh. Medium eggs tend to be just the right size and weight for those starting their yoni egg journey.

DRILLED AND UNDRILLED YONI EGGS

A drilled egg is one in which a small hole is drilled into it, where you can attach a string of, for example, unfavored fluoride free floss.

Some women prefer to attach the string, so that they can gently pull the string to expel the egg, similar to how a tampon comes out. Many beginners wish to use a drilled egg at first in order to feel assured that there will be no difficulty in removal. However, undrilled eggs are completely safe and easily removable. The hole in the crystal will not affect its properties.

In addition to that some women choose the drilled eggs in order to tie the string to a small weight, and practice vaginal weight-lifting. This said, the undrilled eggs can also be used to strenghen the yoni because their weight itself. Just by maintaining them inside the yoni can get stronger and it enhances the nerve-ending growth, which can make you more aware of your yoni and increases the control of your yoni muscles.

Personally I find the cleaning of the drilled eggs a bit harder.

HOW TO STRING YOUR YONI EGG

If you’ve bought a drilled egg then you’re going to first want to string it. Dental floss is a good option to string your yoni egg, so long as it is unwaxed and unscented. This is because it is very durable and has low risk of fibers coming off into your yoni. Alternatively, you may wish to use unbleached and non-dyed silk thread or hemp twine if you prefer something a bit more natural. Just make sure you change your string after each use as it is porous and can harbour bacteria! Stringing your egg is simple. You cut an amount of string approximately 30 cms long, fold it in half, thread the two ends through the drilled hole in your egg, thread the two ends through the loop created until pulled tight and tie the loose ends in a knot. HOW TO INSERT AND WEAR A YONI EGG

You could set a sacred space for the insertion of the egg and insert it with an intention. Some women use lubricants to slide the egg inside without discomfort. You will know best if you need it. If you do, I would recommend you to use is organic extra virgin coconut oil as it is completely natural and has antibacterial and antifungal properties, which helps to keep our delicated vaginal microbiome in balance.

You can also warm up your yoni egg by rubbing it between your hands and even give yourself a sensual massage before inserting it  whilst being in a lying or sitting position. Keep the egg at the entrance of your yoni and rather then pushing it in, let it absorb it. There is no need to push it all the way up to the cervix like a tampon. Instead, once the egg is past the yoni entrance, remove contact with your hands and allow your yoni to bring it to a place that is comfortable, similar to a menstrual cup.  Here you can watch a video on how to insert a yoni egg.

Once the egg is inserted you may choose to simply go about your daily activities. For first timers it might be nice to remain sitting or lying for a while whilst meditating and focusing on your womb area.  You may choose to incorporate affirmations to work on unblocking any energy within the sacral chakra. Here are some suggestions:

  • It is my birthright to receive pleasure.
  • I honour the sacred body in which my soul resides.
  • I welcome sensuality into my life.
  • I embrace my vibrant sexuality.
  • Creating art nourishes my soul and brings me joy.
  • I am a lovable and desirable being.
  • I am comfortable in my body and I treat it with care.
  • Sex is a sacred connection.
  • I allow my creativity to flow through me freely.
  • I receive pleasure and abundance with every breath I take.
  • I let go of past feelings that no longer serve me.
  • I choose to feel joy and excitement often.
  • I feel safe enjoying sex.

You might want to start off slowly wearing the yoni egg only for half an hour or an hour to see how your yoni responds to it. Many experienced practitioners choose to sleep with their egg inside them.

In general, the same advice for how long to leave tampons in also applies to yoni eggs. No more than 8-10 hours. If you get any signs of cramping, then you have definitely overdone it. Give your yoni a rest. Sharp intense pain or more notable cramping could be a sign of a physical condition and should not be ignored. If you experience this level of discomfort, it is important that you seek help from a medical professional.

If you decide to sleep with a yoni egg, bare in mind that the crystal works with your subconsciousness and can bring up emotions in you, which might affect your dreams and bring mood swings, particularly when using an obsidian egg!

Some women may feel intense energy shifts after wearing a yoni egg, while others may not feel anything at all. It is important to remember that every body and energy system responds differently. One thing is for sure,  the crystal is working it’s magic.

EXERCISES WITH A YONI EGG

If you get to a stage in your practice where you feel comfortable wearing your egg and ready to incorporate some movement, these exercises are great options to try!

1. Kegel Exercises

Kegel exercises are the most common exercises women do while wearing a yoni egg. These exercises are intended to cause your yoni muscles to clench around the egg, in time strengthening them and activating nerve endings. Kegel exercises are performed by contracting the muscles for a short time followed by releasing and relaxing. You could contract 10 seconds (inhale) and then relax 10 seconds (exhale). If you’re unsure of how to contract your yoni muscles, try to imagine yourself holding in your urine mid flow. This action will help you to engage the yoni muscles.

2. Squats

Start in a standing position with your feet slightly wider than hip width distance apart. Slowly bend your knees as if you were sitting on a chair, taking care letting your knees come forward past your toes, which you should still be able to see. Once your thighs are parallel to the floor, engage the glute muscles and ground down through the heels to push yourself up back to standing.

3. Bridge

Lie on your back, bend your knees and place your feet hip width distance apart at a 90 degree angle.Ground down through your feet and raise your hips up in the air while engaging your pelvic floor muscles. Hold this position before gently lowering down.

4. Leg Lifts

Lie on your back with your legs extended and place your hands under your tailbone to keep your lower back engaged with the floor. Slowly raise your legs until they are extended with the feet in the air. Hold this position before gently lowering down.

RELEASING THE EGG

Rest assured that your yoni egg cannot get stuck inside you. If you are using a drilled egg, use the string to gently pull out the yoni egg while simultaneously bearing down with your pelvic floor muscles. If you are using an undrilled egg the easiest way is to get it out in a squatting position or by sitting on the toilet. Bear down with your pelvic floor muscles until the egg releases itself from your yoni, or is low enough that you can retrieve it using your hand. Yes, it is a bit like laying an egg 😉 Please do not to panic if your yoni egg doesn’t come out straight away. Keep breathing and relaxing and you will release the egg eventually.

I hope that this article has provided you with some good guidance. Remember, your yoni egg practice is your own sacred ritual and you can take or leave any of the tips that I’ve given from my own personal experience. Have fun exploring your body and connecting with your yoni in this sacred way!
